Mumbai: Woman stopped over not wearing mask thrashes BMC worker
In a shocking incident, a female Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) worker in Mumbai was attacked by a woman who was stopped for not wearing a protective face mask in a public space and breaking the COVID-19 guidelines in place. The incident took place in the Kandivali Road area of Mumbai, where COVID-19 cases have been on the rise at an alarming rate. Here's more.
Woman seen thrashing BMC worker in viral video
In a video that surfaced on social media, the woman without the mask is seen boarding an autorickshaw when she is stopped by the BMC worker, who asks her to wear her mask. The woman then suddenly lunges at the municipal worker and slaps her. However, the BMC worker refuses to let her go even as she continues to punch and kick her.
BMC worker kept asking woman to wear mask
Agitated over being stopped for not wearing a protective face mask by the municipal worker, the woman is also heard shouting, "How dare you stop me? How dare you touch me?" However, the BMC worker keeps asking her to wear a mask. Even after being attacked, the civic body worker is seen asking some people gathered there to not let the maskless woman go.

One can be fined for not wearing mask in Mumbai
The video clearly shows the woman was violating the COVID-19 rules as she was seen traveling in a public transport without a face mask. To note, a person not found wearing a mask can be fined Rs. 200 in Mumbai. The incident comes even as the situation in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, continues to be concerning over the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.
Maharashtra reported its highest single-day rise ever on Thursday
To recall, Maharashtra on Thursday reported a whopping number of 25,833 COVID-19 cases in a single day—the highest that the state has witnessed since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic last year. There has been a sudden surge of infections in Maharashtra in the past few weeks. The state had 1,78,848 active cases as of Friday morning, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
CM Thackeray warns of lockdown if people don't follow rules
In view of the surging COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray urged people in the state to always wear a mask and adhere to the guidelines without fail and also warned of another lockdown if they don't follow safety rules. On Friday, the state government also imposed restrictions on theaters, auditoriums, and private offices, among others, asking them to operate at a 50% capacity.
