    What's the story

Over 100 students from SOA University in Odisha were defrauded in their campus placements, after the companies that apparently hired them said they were not part of campus recruitment at the university.

The matter came to light when several B.Tech graduates were turned away when they showed up for work at Huawei.

University authorities said they were cheated and offered compensation to the students.

    Information

Nine companies involved in the matter

The students who were defrauded were given jobs in nine companies, Huawei, Ircon Construction, Schneider Electric, Mitshubishi Electric, Honeywell, Toshiba, Magneti Marelli Supertech and Intel.

    The case

    How was the University defrauded?

When university officials cross checked with companies which had apparently recruited the students, they were told the offer letters were not given by them.

The university said they hired a consultancy for conducting the campus placements, and that they would file a police complaint against them.

They added that firm had charged the university a consultancy fee as well for the placements.

    Compensation

    University to compensate students

The University said they would compensate the students who were defrauded by paying them a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000 for a year or until they find a job.

They added that they were also offering teaching assistant positions at the university, until the students found jobs.

They added that if the students pursued masters in the same college, their fees would be waived.
