FSSAI's new labels to help you eat better

India

Big change coming soon: Packaged foods high in salt, sugar, or fat will soon sport bold warning labels right on the front.
FSSAI is rolling this out after a Supreme Court order, ditching the old star-rating idea.
The goal? To help you spot unhealthy snacks at a glance and make smarter choices—no nutrition degree needed.

Why the change? India's health crisis

India's dealing with a serious health crunch—overweight and obesity cases could jump from 180 million in 2021 to 449 million by 2050, and about 101 million people already have diabetes.
Other countries like Chile and Brazil saw real results after adding these warnings, such as reduced sugary beverage sales and more consumers making healthier choices.

Labels could lead to healthier food options

These new labels will make it way easier to know what you're eating in India's massive ₹10 lakh crore packaged food market.
It's not just about awareness—it could push brands to make healthier stuff too.
This is a major move for public health, aiming to help everyone eat better without overthinking every label.
