India improves its position in Climate Risk Index

India

India just dropped to 15th place in the latest Germanwatch Climate Risk Index for 2024—an improvement from last year's 10th spot.
This means India's risk from extreme weather is lower than before, which is a big deal considering it was one of the most affected countries over the past three decades.

Extreme weather events' impact on India

Even with this progress, India isn't out of the woods.
In the last 30 years, extreme weather events like cyclones and heatwaves have caused over 80,000 deaths and nearly $170 billion in damages here.
Globally, these disasters claimed more than eight lakh lives and racked up $4.5 trillion in losses since 1995.
So while things are looking up for India on paper, staying prepared is still key.
