States, UTs have 6 months to make roads safer: SC

India

The Supreme Court has told all Indian states and Union Territories they have six months to set clear rules for safer roads.
This move covers everything from better footpaths and crossings for pedestrians to new standards for how roads (except National Highways) are built and maintained.

Pedestrian safety in focus

Justice JB Pardiwala's bench wants states to focus on pedestrian safety—think proper sidewalks, safe crossings, and directions relating to white LED lights, red, blue, and unauthorized hooters, including issues identified near the Delhi High Court.
States also need to regulate cycles, handcarts, and other non-motorized vehicles in public spaces.

Road accidents are a major issue in India

India has a huge problem with road accidents.
The Supreme Court is stepping in because just making rules isn't enough—they need real action from every state.
With a strict deadline now set, this is about closing big gaps in road safety so everyone can get around more safely.
