Misa Bharti is a medical professional, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) politician, and Rajya Sabha, Member of Parliament from Bihar. She is the daughter of RJD president and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav. Bharti was named after the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), the law used by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to detain political opponents during the Emergency (1975-77). She did her MBBS from Patna Medical College Hospital. She contested for the first time in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Patliputra constituency but lost to BJP candidate and RJD rebel Ram Kripal Yadav. In 2016, she became a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar. In the 2019 General Elections, she again lost to BJP’s Ram Kripal Yadav from Patliputra. Bharti raises her voice for women’s issues, including gender equality, girl child education, and increased women’s participation in the public sphere. She has also been a member of the Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution, Consultative Committee for Ministry of External Affairs, and Committee on Subordinate Legislation.
