13 new frog species found hopping around Northeast India
Technology
Researchers just uncovered 13 new bush frog species across Northeast India, bumping the country's total from 82 to 95.
These tiny frogs were spotted in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur.
How they did it
Between 2019 and 2024, scientists trekked through forests in eight states and collected specimens from dozens of spots—including protected areas.
They used acoustics, genetics, and morphology to confirm these frogs are truly new to science.
Why it matters
Many of these frogs live only in specific forests or reserves, making them extra vulnerable if those habitats disappear.
The study clears up confusion about bush frog types and highlights why protecting Northeast India's wild spaces is so important right now.
