OpenAI—the team behind ChatGPT—just put out a big warning: AI is advancing so quickly that it's almost able to make scientific discoveries on its own.
In a recent blog post, the company warned that these advances could be "potentially catastrophic" if we don't act fast to keep things safe.

OpenAI pointed out that today's AI can already outperform humans at tricky tasks and is "80% of the way to an AI researcher."
By next year, they expect AI to start making small discoveries, with even bigger breakthroughs by 2028.
The company says we need smart safety rules in place ASAP, since these changes could seriously impact fields like science and medicine.
