AI is taking over coding, and it's a bittersweet change
Bret Taylor, OpenAI's chairman and a lifelong coder, recently shared how tough it feels to step back from writing code as AI takes over more programming tasks.
On the Cheeky Pint podcast, he admitted, "I feel like I won't be a self-actualized software engineer in the future if I'm too precious about that artifact which used to be so central to me."
Taylor's journey from coder to AI advocate
Taylor helped build Google Maps and has led tech giants like Meta and Salesforce.
He says coding was "my entire life before."
Now, at his startup Sierra, he encourages everyone to use AI for coding, calling it an "Iron Man suit," even though it means giving up some of the craft he loves.
The future of programming in an AI world
Taylor worries about what programming will look like as AI tools get better.
He's not alone: Boris Cherny from Anthropic says their Claude Code tool has "practically solved" coding already.
Taylor thinks in the future, AI agents might replace traditional apps and dashboards entirely.
