Amazon constructs massive AI data centers in Indiana
Amazon is building a massive AI data center campus on 1,200 acres near New Carlisle, Indiana.
Called Project Rainier, it'll eventually have about 30 giant centers packed with custom Trainium2 chips—powering Anthropic's push for human-level AI.
Seven centers are already up and running, and construction is moving fast.
This is a significant investment—$11 billion—and it'll create numerous jobs. But powering all these centers takes serious energy: enough for 1 million homes!
Amazon's also planning similar sites to keep up with Meta and OpenAI in the AI race.
Project Rainier raises environmental concerns in Indiana
Project Rainier will use millions of gallons of water each year for cooling, which has some locals worried about wetlands disappearing and wells running dry.
It's a reminder that scaling up AI tech comes with real environmental challenges for communities nearby.
