Apple iPhone event: All the major announcements

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, going up to 2TB. Apple will open pre-orders on October 16, with official retail availability kicking off on October 23.

Apple's folding screen uses a multi-layer laminated stack featuring a nanotexture-treated layer protected by a stiff polymer and proprietary scratch-resistant coating. The screen is backed by an underlying titanium plate and carbon-fiber hinge reinforcement. Powering it all is the A20 Pro chip, equipped with a custom dual-display engine, a dedicated vapor chamber and Apple’s in-house C2 cellular modem. Split battery cells across both halves operate as a single system, delivering up to 44 hours of video playback when using the outer display.

The foldable iPhone Duo has finally been revealed. Apple engineered the chassis around aerospace-grade titanium, touting it as the slimmest iPhone ever built when unfolded. Its custom hinge mechanism utilizes a variable-torque profile to deliver balanced resistance across angles. The foldable sports a 5.4-inch outer screen and unfolds into a massive 7.6-inch Super Retina display that conceals a camera for FaceTime. Apple has also opted for a side-mounted Touch ID button for unlocking the device.

Apple has unveiled Audio Intelligence, framing it as the hearing counterpart to camera-based Visual Intelligence. Built into the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, the feature automatically detects critical ambient sounds, transcribes audio, and handles context-aware note-taking. Another new feature, Live Rewind, transcribes the last 15 seconds of missed conversation with a double-click of the Digital Crown. Siri Recaps, an opt-in tool that summarizes meetings and conversations on customizable schedules without saving raw audio recordings.

Apple Watch is adding a native Readiness score, matching rivals like Garmin and Samsung by turning heart rate variability and sleep data into a daily recovery rating. The Health app also adds Health Age and a Longevity tab to track biological health over time.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for the base 256GB storage option. The Pro Max version costs $1,299 for the same 256GB option. Pre-orders start this Saturday and the devices will go on sale on September 18.

Apple also debuted Apple Reference Image, a hardware-level authenticity feature designed to verify real photos in an age of generative AI. Built directly into the iPhone 18 Pro's main sensor, the system cryptographically signs image data at the pixel level the instant a photo is taken. This creates a tamper-proof hardware receipt proving the picture came from a physical camera rather than an AI generator.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max introduce a 48MP Fusion camera featuring a mechanical variable aperture. Powered by six laser-cut polymer blades and a custom rotor, the lens shifts between an ultra-wide f/1.8 for portraits and low-light shots to narrower stops for crisp background detail.

The iPhone 18 Pro features a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro, paired with higher-conductivity graphite for enhanced heat dissipation. With A20 Pro efficiencies, system optimizations, and battery refinements, Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of battery life, while the 18 Pro Max jumps to 45 hours.

The A20 Pro is "an exceptional chip" with a 2nm design. It has a 6-core CPU with two new super cores that are up to 20% faster, and four new efficiency cores. The SoC also has a faster GPU with 7 cores, promising 40% improved performance. There are six neural accelerators as well, to speed up AI tasks.

Apple has just revealed the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models. They come in black, silver, glacier blue, and burgundy colorways. The devices feature color-matched aluminum and back glass. The iPhone 18 Pro range will also have access to the company's latest foundational models for on-device processing.

The standard iPhone 18 is not expected to be part of tonight’s lineup. Supply-chain reports indicate Apple is splitting its product cycle to keep the September spotlight strictly on the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone Duo. The baseline iPhone 18, entry-level iPhone 18e, and the successor to the sleek iPhone Air have reportedly been pushed to the first half of 2027.

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are tipped for significant camera upgrades. The highlight is a rumored variable aperture on the main lens, allowing users to physically control how much light hits the sensor. That mechanical shift delivers improved optical bokeh, sharper portraits, and better low-light shots without leaning solely on software processing.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are not expected to bring major changes in display size. The iPhone 18 Pro is likely to keep a 6.3-inch screen while the Pro Max may continue with a larger one at around 6.9-inch.

However, Apple could reduce the space occupied by Dynamic Island, possibly making it smaller and creating more usable screen area without changing overall phone dimensions.

Apple's first foldable will sport a book-style design, opening into a bigger screen. Leaks suggest an external display of around 5.3-5.5-inch and an internal one of 7.7-7.8-inch with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

On the rear, it will have two cameras. For selfies and video calls, both the cover display and inner folding screen will house a camera. The innovative device will be powered by Apple's all-new A20 Pro chip based on TSMC's 2nm architecture.

Just hours before Apple's keynote, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that the company's first foldable will be called the iPhone Duo. The foldable is expected to start at $2,000 for 256GB of storage, climbing to roughly $3,000 for a 2TB version.

Apple's new CEO, John Ternus, will be the face of tonight's iPhone-centric launch event in Cupertino. The event comes just over a week after Tim Cook became the tech giant's executive chairman earlier this month.
