Arkisys-Odin Space to insure satellites against debris strikes
Arkisys (from California) and Odin Space (from London) are teaming up to launch a new kind of satellite insurance.
Instead of covering everything, their plan only kicks in if your satellite actually gets hit by space junk—and they'll use real impact data from Odin's tiny Nano Sensors riding on Arkisys's next mission.
It's a smarter, more affordable way to protect satellites in orbit.
Why does this matter?
Space is getting crowded—there are over 46,000 pieces of debris big enough to wreck a satellite, all zipping around at crazy speeds.
With these sensors acting like black boxes for space impacts, insurers can finally tell if damage was caused by debris and only pay out when it really happens.
That means lower costs for companies.
What's next for Odin Space?
Odin just raised $3 million to put even more sensors and scout satellites into orbit.
They're betting that better data will make space safer (and insurance cheaper) as the industry grows up.
