Facebook puts new limits on link posts—here's why people are talking

Technology

Meta is testing a new rule on Facebook: if you're not Meta Verified, you can only post two external links a month from certain professional accounts and Pages.
The update, set to begin December 16, 2025, quickly got attention online thanks to industry watchers like Matt Navarra.

What's Meta trying to do here?

Meta says it wants to see if letting Verified users share more links actually adds value.
The Meta Verified badge costs £9.99/month and comes with perks like extra security.
Good news: the two-link cap doesn't apply to comments, Instagram or WhatsApp posts, or approved affiliate links.

Why are publishers worried?

Even though publishers aren't directly affected by this test right now, many are uneasy.
This follows last year's move by Meta to show less news—which reportedly cut site traffic in half for some outlets.
Analysts such as David Buttle say this could be another step away from free news sharing as Meta focuses more on paid reach and building out its metaverse and AI projects.
