Google unveils AI-Driven weather lab and cyclone model
Google's Weather Lab, built by DeepMind and Google Research, just dropped a website that uses AI to predict cyclones—where they'll go, how strong they'll get, and even their size and shape. The tool can show 50 possible cyclone paths up to 15 days ahead, providing additional insights alongside official updates.
How the AI works
This AI learned from nearly 5,000 storms over the past 45 years. Unlike older models that often struggle to predict both where a cyclone will go and how intense it'll be at the same time, this one does both together for a more complete picture.
You can compare its predictions with traditional forecasts
Weather Lab lets you compare its AI predictions with traditional physics-based forecasts from top European weather experts. In tests, the AI was actually more accurate at predicting cyclone tracks five days out—and you can even check out two years' worth of past predictions.
For now, it's just for research
The US National Hurricane Center has checked the model's accuracy, and it's already nailed recent storms like Honde and Garance. For now though, Weather Lab is just for research—not official warnings—but it shows what smarter forecasting could look like soon.
