What's the story

This year, Google has a special focus on making its products darker. From apps to Android Q, everything is being updated with a dark mode aimed at saving power and offering a pleasant user experience. Now, as part of the same effort, the company is testing a dark theme for Chrome, one that would even recolor webpages. Here's how you can use it.

Details

Chrome will darken web pages

Though Chrome's dark mode has already been demoed in beta, it was reported that the user will also get the ability to darken web pages. Now, this option has gone live in Chrome Canary, allowing users to change the entire theme of their browser. Put simply, when you use Chrome's dark mode, the interface of both the browser and web pages will turn black.

Experience

These webpage elements would turn black

The dark mode, as Android Police reported, enables a high-contrast setting, changing some colors of any loaded web pages. Basically, the feature renders all light backgrounds on the web page in black (text turns white), leaving menus in their original colors. Even the address bar and other navigational options, like those for switching tabs, load in the regular material design colors.

Steps

How to use this feature

To use this feature right away, download Google's experimental Chrome Canary browser on your Android phone. Following this, open the browser and head over to chrome://flags to enable a flag named 'enable-android-web-contents-dark-mode'. Once that's done (and you've restarted the browser), a 'force_dark_mode_enabled' preference is activated in the browser's engine, turning the high-contrast setting on.

Launch

When Chrome's dark mode will be available

As of now, the feature can be accessed in the Canary version of Chrome for Android, which is experimental and may carry some bugs. There's no word on when the feature would be seen in a stable release of Chrome, but considering Google's plan to enable system-wide dark mode for Android Q, we expect that to happen in a matter of few months.

Information

Chrome is getting some interesting features

The latest feature adds one more capability into the list of features that Chrome is getting. To recall, the browser is already on track to receive a way to manage extension activity and an option to flag malicious 'lookalike' URLs.
