India and Japan team up for giant space telescope

Technology

India and Japan are joining forces to build the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT)—a massive project that could open up new ways of exploring the universe.
With a 30-meter mirror made from 500 pieces, TMT will help scientists study distant galaxies, black holes, and maybe even signs of life beyond Earth.

Why it matters: tech, teamwork, and tough choices

India's tech is key for aligning the telescope's mirrors, with Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Astrophysics among the leading Indian institutes involved since 2014.
The planned site is Mauna Kea in Hawaii—great for stargazing but also sacred to Native Hawaiians, so there are ongoing talks about respecting local culture.
Hanle in Ladakh has been discussed as an alternative site.
This project highlights India's growing role in global science and shows how big discoveries can balance innovation with cultural respect.
