Made in India, made for India: Embracing linguistic diversity through AI
India just launched BharatGen, its first government-backed multimodal large language model (LLM), built by IIT Bombay. This AI can handle text, speech, and images across 22 Indian languages, aiming to help out in areas like healthcare, education, farming, and governance.
BharatGen works well with less data
BharatGen is designed to work well even with less data—perfect for Indian languages that aren't big online. It's all about giving India more control over its digital world and making tech more inclusive for everyone. With support from 25 innovation hubs, the project also hopes to boost local startups and build up AI talent.
BharatGen aims to bridge digital gaps
By focusing on local needs and reducing reliance on foreign tech, BharatGen could make AI tools more accessible across the country. The goal? Bridge digital gaps, celebrate India's language diversity, and move closer to a future where homegrown tech leads the way.
