Maritime Fusion wants to power ships with floating fusion reactors by 2032
A US startup called Maritime Fusion has big plans: they're working on a fusion reactor that floats on a ship, hoping to make clean energy the new standard for maritime travel.
CEO Justin Cohen says recent tech leaps in AI and superconducting magnets are making this once far-off idea feel possible.
How it works—and why it matters
Instead of using traditional nuclear fuel, their reactor will create energy from water—no meltdown risks and significantly reduced radiation concerns compared to traditional nuclear reactors.
Their first plant, named Yinsen, aims to launch by 2032 with a projected output of 30 megawatts, aiming to be cost-competitive with today's expensive alternative ship fuels.
Backed by $4.5 million in seed funding and support from investors like Y Combinator, the team is sourcing high-tech parts from Japan to bring this ambitious project to life.
