Meta tells India it will boost CSAM and deepfake efforts
Meta just told the Indian government it's boosting its efforts to tackle child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and deepfake content across its platforms.
This came up during a meeting with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on August 6, 2026, where Meta's global chief policy officer Joel Kaplan met Vaishnaw to discuss the technical aspects of compliance.
Technical meetings will continue, and Meta will have to follow the law of the land.
India demands Meta follow domestic laws
Indian officials made it clear: social media companies need to play by India's laws, not hide behind foreign policies.
Meta agreed to keep talking with the government about compliance and content moderation, especially after last month's temporary restriction of a Facebook post by the PM.
The government is also reviewing how Meta handles high-profile accounts and paid content to make sure everything stays fair and legal.
