Meta's $14.3B deal for Scale AI parts: Muse spark falters
Last year, Meta reportedly dropped a massive $14.3 billion to buy parts of Scale AI and brought in Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer.
Their big hope was Muse Spark, a new AI model built into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, but it hasn't managed to keep up with rivals like Anthropic's Claude or Google's Gemini, especially when it comes to coding tasks.
Meta kept Muse Spark proprietary
Muse Spark leans on Llama 4 code and datasets even though it's marketed as something brand new.
Its limited API rollout means few developers can actually use it outside Meta's platforms.
After some risky findings during testing, including high-risk areas and bio risk, Meta kept Muse Spark in proprietary development for safety, but the Llama 4 disappointment and limited accessibility made many developers lose trust.
With almost all of Meta's revenue still coming from ads, critics wonder if this big AI gamble will really pay off.
