New oral drug could change the game for diabetes and obesity
A new daily pill called orforglipron helped people with type 2 diabetes who were overweight or obese lose weight and manage blood sugar in a global study.
Over 1,600 adults took either orforglipron or a placebo for about a year and a half.
Noticeable weight loss, better health markers
People on the highest dose lost an average of 10.5% of their body weight—way more than the placebo group's 2.2%.
The drug also improved blood sugar (A1c), waist size, and blood pressure.
Most side effects were mild stomach issues, similar to what's seen with injectable treatments.
Why this matters
Orforglipron has shown promising results in earlier trials and may offer better outcomes than some existing oral medications.
If it gets FDA approval in 2026, it could offer an easier—and possibly cheaper—alternative to shots for managing diabetes and obesity.
That might mean less hassle and more options for people dealing with these conditions.
