OpenAI claims $1 million Navier-Stokes solution, Tristan Buckmaster suspects Codex use
OpenAI just announced that it claims to have solved the famous Navier-Stokes problem, a math puzzle worth $1 million.
But NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster says he suspected OpenAI may have used his and Levent Alpoge's Codex logs, and he's not happy about it.
Buckmaster declined OpenAI credit excluding Alpoge
Buckmaster was working on another problem related to Navier-Stokes with Levent Alpoge, using OpenAI's Codex tool, and suspects the company used their Codex logs.
He turned down OpenAI's offer to share credit because it would leave out Alpoge, who works at Anthropic.
"The game is up," Buckmaster said, calling this a turning point for math.
The academic community is upset too, with some experts warning that AI companies are putting competition ahead of collaboration, and that could hurt future research.
