Pioneering steps toward synthetic human genome initiated
A team of top UK researchers just launched the Synthetic Human Genome (SynHG) project, aiming to create a human chromosome entirely from scratch.
Backed by £10 million from the Wellcome Trust, they're hoping this bold move will open up new ways to understand our DNA and develop next-gen medical treatments—think custom cell therapies and tissues that can resist viruses.
The goal is to have their synthetic chromosome ready in five to 10 years.
More about the project
If SynHG succeeds, it could change how we treat genetic diseases by making gene editing and personalized medicine more precise.
The team knows it's a big leap—building a human chromosome has never been done before—so they're working closely with ethics experts and want the public involved in every step.
By keeping things transparent, they hope science moves forward in a way that matches what society values most.
