Reddit considers orb scanner to combat AI bots
Reddit is thinking about using World ID—a digital ID system co-founded by Sam Altman, who is also the CEO of OpenAI—to help tell real users apart from bots.
The tech uses an Orb device that scans your iris to create a unique digital identity, aiming to keep things private while fighting fake accounts.
Reddit hasn't finalized how it'll roll this out yet, and there will be other ways to verify too.
How World ID works
World ID is part of the Worldcoin project, which hopes to give everyone a digital currency. After scanning your iris (and deleting the image right away), you get some Worldcoin crypto as a reward.
Orbs are already in malls across the US and UK but have run into privacy concerns—some countries are investigating or banning them.
Still, Tools for Humanity (the company behind it) plans to add 12,000 more Orbs worldwide next year, saying it can help make online verification safer for everyone.
