Threads introduces direct messaging, distancing from Instagram
Meta's Threads app now lets you send direct messages (DMs) without hopping over to Instagram.
You can react with emojis, mute chats, or report spam right inside the app.
Group chats and more controls are coming soon, but for now, DMs aren't available in Japan, Australia, the UK, or the EU.
Threads DMs only work between users who follow each other back and aren't encrypted yet.
Blocking someone syncs across both Threads and Instagram.
Meta is also testing Facebook login and standalone Threads accounts—so you won't need Insta forever.
Fun fact: a lot of people on Threads follow totally different accounts than they do on Instagram.
Threads is still focusing on discovery and AI features
Threads' new "highlighter" feature puts trending topics front and center so you don't miss what's buzzing.
While this update brings Threads closer to rivals like X and Bluesky, Meta is focusing first on discovery tools, AI features like highlighters, and ads—monetization will come later down the road.
