Trai tightens SMS rules to fight scams—here's what's changing
Technology
Trai has issued tougher SMS rules to help protect you from scams.
Now, telecom companies have to clearly tag things like links and callback numbers in their commercial SMS templates, so these can be checked against trusted sources before messages reach your phone.
The goal? Make it much harder for fraudsters to slip in shady links or fake contacts.
What happens next?
Operators have 60 days to update their SMS templates—after that, any message using non-compliant templates gets blocked.
These new rules build on earlier efforts to keep digital communication safe, especially for banking, financial services, and government communications.
It's all about making sure you can trust the texts you get (and hopefully worry less about sketchy messages).
