Urban VPN Proxy is secretly collecting your data

Technology

Turns out, the popular Chrome extension Urban VPN Proxy (with six million users!) has been quietly scooping up people's private info—including chats from AI tools like ChatGPT—and selling it for marketing purposes.
Security firm Koi recently discovered this, warning that the extension does all this without asking for permission.

How it works and why you should care

Koi's Idan Dardikman explained that Urban VPN uses hidden scripts to grab sensitive stuff like medical and financial details.
The only real fix? Uninstalling the extension.
Even more concerning, the developer's privacy policy admits they share browsing data with a data broker called BiScience—totally at odds with what's promised on the Chrome Web Store.
This is a good reminder to double-check privacy policies before installing any app or extension, and if something feels off, it's best to delete it right away.
