You can soon buy inactive usernames on X
What's the story
X, the social media platform, is gearing up to launch a new feature - the X Handle Marketplace. The upcoming service will allow the Premium Plus and Premium Business users to search for and request inactive usernames. These handles will be divided into two categories: Priority handles and Rare handles.
Handle classification
Priority handles will be free, Rare handles will be paid
The Priority handles in the X Handle Marketplace will be free and will usually consist of full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations. On the other hand, Rare handles will be a paid option. These unique usernames could cost anywhere from $2,500 to over seven figures depending on their demand and uniqueness.
User impact
New handle will freeze your old one
When you get a new handle through the X Handle Marketplace, your old one will be frozen. The company may also offer a redirect option as a paid add-on in the future. However, if you ever downgrade your X subscription, you'll revert back to your original username and lose access to the one acquired through this marketplace.
