CWG Day 1 Round-up: India win in badminton, table tennis

What's the story

The first day of the 21st Commonwealth Games went well for the Indian contingent. After clinching two medals in weightlifting, India won the badminton and table tennis team events. Moreover, there were superb individual results in boxing and squash. In swimming too, India progressed into the semi-finals . Here are all the results and updates from Day 1.

India progress

India beat Pakistan 5-0 in round 2 of badminton

India thrashed Pakistan 5-0 in round 2 of the badminton team event. Shuttling ace Saina Nehwal overcame Pakistan's Mahoor Shahzad 21-7, 21-11. Men's doubles duo of Chirag Shetty and Pranaav Chopra defeated Irfan Bhatti and Murad Ali 21-9, 21-15. In women's doubles event, Ashwini Ponnappa and Ruthvika Gadde thrashed Mahoor Shahzad and Palwasha Bashir 21-6, 21-10. There was victory for Kidambi Srikanth as well.

Clean sweep for India in table tennis

Indian women's paddlers beat Wales 3-1 in the team event. In the men's section, India overcame Ireland 3-0. Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran were triumphant in their respective singles matches. The duo of Sathiyan-Harmeet also won their doubles encounter.

India fare well in boxing, squash and swimming

India's Manoj Kumar entered the Round of 16 after beating Osita Umeh of Nigeria in Men's 69 kg Round of 32. In swimming, Virdhawal Khade and Srihari Nataraj qualified to compete in semi-final on Thursday. In squash, Dipika Pallikal beats Trinidad and Tobago's Charlotte Knaggs 3-0 in women's singles round of 32. Joshna Chinappa too won against Papua New Guinea's Lynette Vai 3-0.

Poor day for India in basketball

In basketball, India had a poor outing on Thursday. There were losses for both men's and women's teams in the Preliminary Round Pool B matches. Indian women lost 57-66 to Jamaica as men's team fell down against 87-96 to Cameroon.
