EU eases up on 2035 combustion engine ban

Auto

The EU just tweaked its big plan to phase out new combustion engine cars by 2035.
Instead of a total ban, they're now aiming for a 90% cut in vehicle CO2 emissions (compared to 2021 levels), giving carmakers and drivers a bit more flexibility as the market shifts.

Hybrids, biofuels, and compromise

Under the new rules, hybrids and plug-in hybrids can still be sold after 2035, as long as that last 10% of emissions is balanced out with greener options like biofuels or synthetic e-fuels.
The move comes after pushback from countries like Germany and Italy—and major automakers—who wanted more time to adapt.
Car companies now have until 2030-32 to hit a 55% emissions cut for cars (and vans get an easier target too).
