How cyberattack on JLR in 2024 disrupted global vehicle production
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by Tata Motors, was hit by a major cyberattack on August 31, 2024.
JLR proactively shut down its global IT systems in response to the attack, pausing production at key plants in the UK, Slovakia, Brazil, and India.
The group Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters claimed responsibility for the attack that disrupted vehicle manufacturing worldwide.
Attack brought JLR to its knees
With production lines halted—including those making Range Rovers and Defenders—JLR's sales took a big hit: wholesale and retail volumes dropped over 24% and 17% in the second quarter.
By October 2024, JLR managed to partially restart engine and assembly work, gradually bringing back its 33,000 employees.
The incident exposed real vulnerabilities in automotive tech systems—a wake-up call for carmakers everywhere to step up their cybersecurity game.
