Soon, CBSE schools will teach artificial intelligence: Details here
In a bid to take technology education to a new front, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to add artificial intelligence (AI) as a subject for students. Starting next academic session, the technology shaping the future of mankind will be taught to students of class 8th, 9th, and 10th as an elective subject. Here's more on this decision.
First up, what is artificial intelligence?
For those unaware, artificial or machine intelligence is the ability of computer systems to learn skills and perform tasks requiring human intelligence and decision making. It is being employed in a range of fields and is already beating biological intelligence of mankind in many ways. Put simply, from speech recognition and automobiles to simple gaming, AI is driving the future of almost every industry.
This is why, CBSE is keen on introducing it
As AI is making a global impact, CBSE wants to keep up with the latest developments and make sure that students are well-versed with what's happening in the sphere of technology. A member of board's governing body stressed on this stance and confirmed that AI would be taught as an optional subject. However, the syllabus for all three classes is yet to be drafted.
Also, CBSE might help schools with the teaching process
"If required, the board will also help in the capacity building of schools for the teaching-learning of the new subject from the next academic session," the member told Hindustan Times. Another official said the idea originated at NITI Aayog meeting and was approved after several discussions with stakeholders as well as a school that was already teaching the subject.
This seems like an excellent move
By teaching about AI, CBSE would not just educate children about machine intelligence, but also raise awareness about the risks it could pose. So, all in all, it is a great move to advance AI development and start discussions around it.
