Coronavirus: India reports record high with 3.32 lakh new cases
India on Friday reported 3.32 lakh new coronavirus infections, marking yet another record high. The nationwide tally has now climbed to 1.62 crore. Meanwhile, over 2,200 more patients died in the past 24 hours—the deadliest day—bringing the death toll to 1,86,920. Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are among the eight states that contributed 75% of the total number of new cases.

According to the Union Health Ministry, till Friday morning, India reported a total of 1,62,63,695 COVID-19 cases. The death toll has reached 1,86,920. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,36,48,159 patients have recovered, while 24,28,616 cases involve active infections. In the past 24 hours alone, India recorded 3,32,730 new infections and 2,263 fresh fatalities. 13,54,78,420 vaccine doses have been administered so far.
Maharashtra reports 67K new cases
67,013 more people tested positive in Maharashtra with a daily positivity rate of 23.8%. The state's tally has now climbed to 40,94,840, which includes 6,99,858 active cases. 568 more deaths also pushed the death toll to 12,583. The districts of Nagpur, Pune, and Mumbai have emerged as areas of concern, reporting a positivity rate of 34%, 26.64%, and 17.21% respectively over the past week.
Kerala sees record surge in infections
Kerala saw a record single-day high of 26,995 new cases with the daily positivity rate touching 20%. The death toll stood at 5,028 with 28 more deaths The cumulative number of cases has reached 13,22,054, with 1,56,226 active cases. As the COVID-19 situation worsens and vaccine shortage persists, the state government has called an all-party meeting on April 26.
Record 25.8K new cases in Karnataka
With 25,795 new cases, Karnataka reported its biggest spike for the third consecutive day. The daily positivity rate stood at 15.9%. The total number of infections has reached 12,47,997, including 1,96,236 active cases. 123 fatalities pushed the death toll to 13,885. Horrifying visuals from Bidar city surfaced on Thursday, showing COVID-19 patients sleeping on the footpath outside BRIMS hospital amid a shortage of beds.
Tamil Nadu sees biggest spike for 9th consecutive day
With 12,652 new cases, Tamil Nadu recorded the biggest single-day spike for the ninth consecutive day. The total caseload has reached 10,37,711, which includes 89,428 active cases. 59 more fatalities pushed the state's death toll to 13,317.
Andhra records biggest spike since early-September
Andhra Pradesh reported 10,759 fresh cases, the highest in a day since early-September last year. The daily positivity rate stood at 25.7%. The cumulative number of cases has reached 9,97,462, out of which, 66,944 cases involve active infections. 31 more deaths took the state's death toll to 7,541. The Chief Minister will chair a high-level meeting to review the situation on Friday.
UP reports record 34K new cases
Uttar Pradesh reported 34,379 new cases, marking the biggest single-day spike for the second consecutive day. The daily positivity rate was a high 17.4%. The total caseload in the state is 9,76,765. Currently, the number of active cases in the state stands at 2,59,810. The state also saw 195 fresh fatalities that pushed the death toll due to the disease to 10,541.
Delhi records deadliest day with 306 fatalities
With 26,169 new cases, Delhi saw a marginal reduction in infections, corresponding a dip in tests. The daily positivity rate stood at a record high of 36.2% with 72,208 tests. With 306 more fatalities, Delhi also recorded its deadliest day. The death toll has now climbed to 13,193. The cumulative number of cases has reached 9,56,348, out of which, 91,618 cases involve active infections.
