Turning 30 seems like an end of an era, and turning 40 would seem worse--believe many in their late 20s. However, today, several of those actually turning 40 believe in the saying "life begins at 40!" But, staying healthy is an entirely different thing and requires close attention. Here are five foods that you must include in your diet if you are touching 40.

    Almonds

Opting for almonds as snacks is a smart choice. A study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that an amino acid, L-arginine, found in almonds, is beneficial for burning carbs and fats, especially during workouts. So munching on a few almonds before your workout routine might actually help you shed extra kilos and stay healthy.

    Carrots

Carrots are loaded with beta carotene which is converted into vitamin A that boosts your immunity and eye health. Carrots are also packed with potassium which can keep your blood pressure under control. It is a fibrous vegetable and so improves digestion. Vitamin K in it is great for bone health. Carotenoids, responsible for the bright hue, may help defend against age-linked vision ailments.

    Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are extremely good for your heart and mind. They're also good for your gut health. Those suffering from osteoporosis should add flaxseeds to their diet. It also helps combat high cholesterol. Roast and grind flaxseeds before consuming them as your body digests and absorbs the nutrients from ground flaxseeds better than whole ones.

    Green leafy vegetables

Leaves like spinach, watercress, kale, and mustard greens, are rich in vitamin K, lutein, folate, calcium, and beta carotene, which are good for memory. Basil has polyphenols, which soothe chronic pain associated with arthritis. Watercress is rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, compounds that are essential for youthful skin. Vitamin E, betaine, and choline in spinach together turn off fat-storing genes in your liver.

    Sweet potatoes

Don't run away from sweet potatoes just because they are categorized as carbohydrates. They contain fiber, keeping you full for longer, thus avoiding unhealthy snacking. They are also rich in magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin A. Sweet potatoes are also great at preventing diabetes. They are rich in antioxidants and can lower the chances of developing some types of cancers.
