Irom Sharmila: News

Commonly known as the ‘Iron lady of Manipur’ or ‘Mengoubi,’ Irom Chanu Sharmila is an activist who specializes in civil and political rights and is also a poet from the Indian state of Manipur. We all know about her courageous act of initiating a hunger strike against the armed forces ( Special powers) act. Sharmila fought against the violent powers given to the armed forces for maintaining public order in the areas that were then tagged as disturbed areas. Although the civil disorder increased after AFSPA was imposed, it threatened the lives of several residents of that area. Sharmila sought to fight against this act, making her one of those rare gems that brought back peace to the northeastern valley.
