Selja Kumari is an Indian politician and former parliamentarian who is a member of the Indian National Congress. Previously, she has served as the Minister of Tourism and Social Justice and Empowerment during Manmohan Singh’s leadership. Kumari was born on September 24, 1962, in Haryana and completed her education at Panjab University. Her father Chaudhary Dalbir Singh was also a member of the Indian National Congress. In 1990, she began her career in politics as the President of the Mahila Congress. In 1991, she was first elected to the 10th Lok Sabha representing Sirsa. She had served as the Union Minister of State for Education and Culture in the Narasimha Rao government. In 1996, Kumari was reelected to the 11th Lok Sabha. During her tenure as the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Kumari worked on several issues related to the rights of marginalized communities and women's empowerment. In 2014, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Haryana. In 2019, Kumari unsuccessfully contested the Indian General Elections from Ambala which she lost to BJP’s Rattan Lal Kataria. Following this, she was appointed as the President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee in 2019.
