As a youngster, he was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He was the General Secretary of the Maharashtra BJP from 1995 to 1999, and again from 2002 till 2011. Between 2011 and 2014, he was the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Tawde won from the Borivali constituency in the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly elections and became the Minister for School Education, Higher & Technical Education, Culture, and Sports & Youth Welfare in the state government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
