Astronomers spot ancient ice cluster beyond Neptune
Technology
Astronomers may have found evidence of a dense group of icy objects way out past Neptune, in the Kuiper Belt.
If confirmed, this group could be a leftover from when our solar system first formed—basically, a time capsule from billions of years ago.
Why it matters
Led by Princeton's Aamir Siraj, the team noticed these objects have really stable orbits about 43 times farther from the Sun than Earth is.
That stability hints they've been there since the solar system's early days.
Studying this cluster could help us understand how giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn ended up where they are now—and give us a peek into our cosmic history.
