Get ready for stunning auroras as solar storms hit Earth
Heads up: Two strong solar flares are sending charged particles toward Earth, which means we could see some beautiful auroras between November 10 and 12—visible in northern US states from New York to Idaho, as well as parts of northern Europe.
The first flare already caused a radio blackout, and both are expected to set off visible light shows as the CMEs reach us.
NOAA has issued geomagnetic storm watch
NOAA has put out a geomagnetic storm watch—minor for today, moderate for November 11-12.
If you're in northern US states or northern Europe, keep an eye out after midnight, especially if you can get away from city lights.
Clear, dark skies will give you the best view.
Storms can disrupt satellites, power systems
Besides cool skies, these storms might disrupt satellites or power systems.
NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center is sharing real-time updates if you want to track the action.
A third burst from today's flare is still being analyzed, so keep an eye out for more alerts soon!
