Imgur is banned in the UK: Here's why

Technology

As of September 30, 2025, Imgur has shut out all UK users after a government investigation issued provisional findings that the platform didn't check users' ages or do enough to protect children's data.
If you're in the UK, you can't log in, upload, or browse on Imgur anymore.

Why did Imgur get banned?

The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) started looking into Imgur back in March and noted in its initial observations that it let anyone sign up—no age questions asked.
The ICO is investigating whether this practice complies with local data protection laws and rules meant to keep kids safer online.
The ICO even warned they might fine Imgur's parent company for these issues.

Who made the call to ban Imgur?

Interestingly, this wasn't forced by regulators—Imgur made the call themselves.
Other apps from their parent company, like Kik messenger, are still up and running because they follow the new safety rules.

Can UK users delete their accounts?

Yes! Even though you can't use Imgur now, UK users can still ask for their accounts and personal info to be deleted under local privacy laws.
This whole situation is part of a bigger push to make online spaces safer for young people in the UK.
