India launches early earthquake warning system
India has rolled out a new early warning system for earthquakes, aiming to give people a heads-up just seconds before a big tremor hits.
Announced by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) in the Himalayan region, this pilot project uses satellite tech to spot ground movement fast—so you can react quickly when every second counts.
System alerts NCS about tremors
The system borrows smart tech from Japan and Taiwan to detect the first signs of an earthquake (P-waves).
Once picked up, alerts go straight to NCS with details on intensity and which areas might feel it most.
Right now, there are over 160 underground sensors and dozens of GNSS units set up across India—Delhi-NCR already has several running.
Plus, with help from the Geological Survey of India, these alerts will reach emergency services even faster, making disaster response stronger than ever.
