Big Bash League: Sydney Sixers sign Steve Smith
Sydney Sixers managed to pull off the biggest coups in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the back end of the ninth edition. Smith will play for the Sixers in January after he returns from Australia's ODI tour of India. He is expected to be available for the Sixers' final two or three games in the league stage. Here's more.
What role will Smith play for Sixers?
The 30-year-old Smith is expected to be available for the Sixers' final two or three games of the regular season. If the side manages to qualify for the BBL Finals, then Smith will get the chance to feature in all of those matches. It's a major highlight for Sixers to get the signature of Smith. He will add a definite shine at number three.
Smith could feature against Melbourne Stars on January 20
Smith's first game in BBL 2019-20 could be against the Melbourne Stars at the SCG on January 20. He is then expected to feature against the Brisbane Heat on January 23 at the Gabba. Earlier, Heat signed South Africa legend AB de Villiers to boost their chances. Sydney Sixers' final game is at home on January 25 against the reigning champions Melbourne Renegades.
How has Smith performed since his return from 12-month ban
After returning from his 12-month ban for a ball-tampering scandal earlier this year, Smith had a decent run in the IPL and 2019 World Cup campaigns respectively. He then stood up in the Ashes 2019 and scored 774 runs that included three tons. Smith did well in the recently-concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively. His best being 80* against Pakistan.
I am excited about getting an opportunity, says Smith
"I am excited about getting an opportunity to play for the Sydney Sixers again," Smith said. "When the schedule came out and I saw there was a chance to wear the Magenta again I jumped at the opportunity and look forward to joining up with the team after my January national team commitments have ended," he added.
