David Boon: News

Former Australian cricketer David Boon is as popular for his mustache as he was for his combative nature on the cricket field. One of the main architects of Australia's resurgence as a cricketing powerhouse in the late '80s and early '90s, Boon began his first-class career for Tasmania in the 1978-79 season at the age of 17. When he made his debut, Tasmania was only in their second Sheffield Shield competition. Boon made his international debut in 1984 in an ODI against the West Indies. He made his Test debut in the same year as well. Although not as stylish of a player as some of his peers, Boon's grit and doggedness prevailed more often than not, and his hunger for runs provided Australia with stability in any position he batted. Part of four consecutive Ashes-winning teams, Boon relished the competition with Australia's arch-rivals. A man for big moments, one of Boon's best moments came when he produced a man-of-the-match performance in the 1987 World Cup final. Boon retired from international cricket in 1996. As of July 2021, he is an ICC match referee and served as a national selector for Australia before that.
