IPL 2022, Punjab Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore: Records broken
Punjab Kings chased down 206 runs versus Royal Challengers Bangalore in match number three of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season on Sunday. RCB started well as the openers put up 50 runs for the first wicket. After Anuj Rawat's dismissal, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli added 118 runs. Du Plessis scored a superb half-century before being dismissed by Arshdeep Singh. Post that Kohli (41*) and Dinesh Karthik (32*) steered RCB post 200. Karthik smashed three fours and three sixes in a 14-ball effort.
PBKS openers Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan made merry in the powerplay overs. They added 63 runs, hitting eight boundaries. In the eighth over, Wanindu Hasaranga broke the partnership from his first delivery bowled. Mayank departed for 32 before Bhanuka Rajapaksa entertained with some glorious shots. Harshal Patel dismissed Dhawan at a crucial juncture. PBKS kept up with the scoring rate and did well.
RCB skipper Faf continued from where he left off for Chennai Super Kings in 2021. The veteran Proteas batter smashed a fluent 57-ball 88. He hit three fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 154.39. Faf has surpassed the 3,000-run mark. He has 3,023 runs at 35.56. Notably, Faf smashed his 23rd IPL fifty. He has also surpassed 100 sixes (103).
Former RCB skipper Kohli slammed an unbeaten 41. The 33-year-old now has 782 runs against PBKS at 31.28. He is the fifth-highest scorer versus PBKS, surpassing Robin Uthappa's tally (758). Overall, Kohli has 6,324 runs at 37.64. Karthik used his versatility to perfection, striking the ball at 228.57. He has gone past 400 IPL fours (402). Overall, he has 4,078 runs at 25.97.
Dhawan, who made his debut for PBKS, batted well to score a 29-ball 43. He slammed five fours and a six. The southpaw shared two valuable stands alongside Mayank and Rajapaksa. Dhawan has raced to 5,827 runs at an average of 35.10. He is now the sixth-highest scorer versus RCB in the IPL (658 runs), surpassing Gautam Gambhir's tally (647).
Faf has become the 10th player to get past 700 runs versus Punjab in the IPL. He has 702 runs at an average of 63.81. He slammed his eighth fifty against PBKS. He has also reached 25 sixes versus PBKS.
Mayank scored a 24-ball 32 and Dhawan did well for his 43. Rajapaksa was the game changer with a superb 22-ball 43. The likes of Liam Livingstone (19), Shahrukh Khan, and Odeon Smith contributed with crucial scores to lift PBKS.
