No other player represented the South African cricket team, which dominated the latter half of the ‘90s, like Lance Klusener. It was only poetic that it was his heroics that led South Africa close to the World Cup final in 1999. Klusener made his international debut in an ODI in 1996 against England. His trademark aggression that was visible throughout his career was showcased in his first Test match against India. In a fiery spell of fast bowling, he took eight wickets for 64 runs. With a stance akin to a baseball batter, Klusener’s batting was a mix of power and skill. His exploits with the bat and ball also earned him the Man of the Tournament award in the 1999 World Cup. Winner of the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award in 2000, Klusener’s form began to wane at the turn of the millennium. His poor run of form with the bat led to him losing his place in the team. Although he made sporadic returns to the team in 2003 and 2004, he couldn’t cement his position. Klusener called it quits from international cricket in 2004.
