'Sacred Games 2' trailer released, to air on August 15

Streaming giant Netflix has released the much-awaited trailer of its maiden Indian original series, Sacred Games' second season. The opening season, that released in July last year was an instant hit, receiving both popularity and critical acclaim. And this time, the spectacle is promised to be bigger and nastier. The series will air on Independence Day, ie. August 15. Check the trailer here.

'Sacred Games' was a rage among Indian web audiences

Adapted for the screen from an eponymous novel by Vikram Chandra, Sacred Games (Season one), directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, was heavily lauded for its gripping plot and A-class performances. The series chronicled the events that followed an anonymous phone call from crime lord Ganesh Gaitonde to troubled Mumbai police officer Sartaj Singh, challenging him to save the city within 25 days.

Watch the trailer: "Calendar nikalo bhaiyo aur behno," instructs Netflix!

Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey enter the game too

Sacred Games owes heavily to its set of uber-talented actors. Apart from Season one's Saif Ali Khan (as Sartaj Singh), Nawazuddin Siddiqui (as Ganesh Gaitonde), and Pankaj Tripathi (Khanna 'Guruji'), the upcoming installment will also feature the ever-consistent Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey in pivotal roles. According to reports, Made in Heaven fame Sobhita Dhulipala might also make an important appearance.

Pankaj Tripathi's 'Guruji' to be the game-changer?

Interestingly, Pankaj Triptathi's mysterious character Khanna Guruji/Gaitonde's third 'father', who was introduced in the first part, can be seen in full glory in the newly-released trailer. The veteran is expected to play a defining part this time. Talking of the new show, Tripathi has said that, "The scale of the show is huge.. The writing is fantastic and the show will be very interesting."

In intriguing part-two, Sartaj's quest to save Mumbai is on

In Season 2, Ganesh Gaitonde comes back in a reformed avatar, while Sartaj's desperate quest to save his city is on. A deeper exploration of Tripathi's Guruji, references of 'war' and 'Hiroshima and Nagasaki', and nastier violence have our adrenaline pumping already. In part two, the pertinent question is, "Is the world worth saving?" And the answer is just a month away!

'Sacred Games 2' to air on Independence Day

Shot extensively across Mumbai, Mombasa (Kenya), Cape Town and Johannesburg, the grittier and grandier Season two of Sacred Games has been directed by Anurag Kashyap and Neeraj Ghaywan (Masaan), while Motwane continues to serve as the showrunner. Sacred Games 2 will premiere on Netflix on Independence Day, ie. August 15. Notably, its release will clash with major flicks, viz. Saaho, Mission Mangal, Batla House.
