5 foods that will help you fight off stress
Feeling stressed? A stress management diet is all you need

We all struggle with stress, but how we handle it makes all the difference. There are many strategies to deal with stress, of which food should top the priority. Some foods are rich in certain nutrients which makes experiencing stress less exhaustive. So, the next time you are under stress, grab onto these healthy stress-busting snacks to calm yourself down.

    Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits are nature's little wonders for a number of reasons. One of them is their ability to relieve stress in us humans. Fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, papayas, and mangoes among others are all excellent sources of vitamin C. Many studies suggest that vitamin C can curb levels of stress hormones while strengthening the immune system.

    Nuts

Due to high amounts of antioxidants, B vitamins, and zinc along with fatty acids, nuts can effectively help reduce stress. Many research studies have found that adults who ate nuts were more likely to have higher levels of optimism, energy, hope, concentration, and a greater interest in activities. Researchers recommend walnuts as the top nut for brain health.

    Dark chocolate

Flavonoids present in dark chocolates can reduce stress by lowering levels of cortisol. It also helps in lowering the fight-or-flight hormones known as catecholamines. Dark chocolates which contain higher levels of cocoa have higher levels of flavonoids. Dark chocolates also work great for calming anxiety due to the large amounts of Tryptophan present in them. Tryptophan is an amino acid that helps secrete serotonin.

    Seeds

A rich source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids, seeds such as flax and chia seeds can be beneficial in helping reduce stress. Sunflower seeds also contain tryptophan which triggers serotonin production. Seeds also contain magnesium, which has been shown to help alleviate depression, fatigue, and irritability. Loading up on these ingredients helps one regulate emotions.

    Leafy greens

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, collard greens, turnip greens, and mustard greens contain magnesium and folate. Folate is a vitamin that helps produce the feel-good chemicals dopamine and serotonin. Lack of magnesium in the body can trigger headaches and fatigue leading to stress. Go for these leafy greens to stock up on magnesium and folate and remain stress-free.
