5 health benefits of ginger
Ginger is part of cuisines across the world and also holds medicinal properties.

Native to Southeast Asia, ginger is a wonder spice. People use dry and fresh ginger in India as a herbal treatment as well as in culinary preparations. It has several nutrients that can largely benefit your body. It has a slightly peppery and sweet flavor with a spicy aroma that turns mellow while cooking. Here are five health benefits of ginger.

Context
Here is what our expert says
  • Over 115 active compounds have been analyzed in ginger. The two most common types that have been studied are gingerols and shogaols.
  • Gingerols inhibit the production of nitrous oxide-free radicals, thereby giving it antioxidant properties.
  • Its anti-inflammatory property is exerted by the inhibition of pro-inflammation enzymes, the same enzymes which are also inhibited by drugs such as steroids & NSAIDs (ex: hydrocortisone, Ibuprofen respectively).
#1
It can treat nausea

Studies have proven that dry ginger can help relieve nausea and vomiting, especially after surgery. It can eliminate nausea in pregnant women, too. Researchers say it keeps your digestive system and blood pressure stable and consistent, respectively. You can take half a teaspoon of ginger powder with honey and lukewarm water to experience relief. It is also helpful for patients going through chemotherapy.

#2
It can help treat indigestion

Ginger is a natural remedy to treat indigestion by lowering excessive stomach acid. It enhances the activity of enzymes called trypsin and pancreatic lipase that improves digestion. These enzymes aid in breaking up and expelling the gas that further provides relief from the pain caused by indigestion. It can also improve bowel movement, which keeps constipation at bay.

#3
It can reduce blood sugar levels

Ginger can also effectively lower high blood sugar levels when consumed in moderation. It can control the production of insulin. One can consume up to four grams of dry ginger a day. According to a study, consumption of ginger can help lower A1C levels and fasting serum glucose levels in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes.

#4
It is healthy for your heart

Ginger is packed with properties that can prevent blood clot formation in the blood vessels of the heart. Ginger, as explained above, has the ability to reduce blood pressure, which in turn protects from cardiovascular diseases. Ginger also has immense antioxidant properties that eliminate the formation of plaque in the arteries caused by high cholesterol, keeping your heart healthy as well.

#5
It can help you shed weight

As per evidence, the presence of a compound named zingerone in ginger can aid in shedding extra kilos. The compound can help burn excess fat stored in your body. Some evidence asserts that ginger can reduce the body mass index (BMI) and increase the markers of blood sugar control in women suffering from obesity. Dry ginger can also keep hunger pangs at bay.
