C Vidyasagar Rao: News

Born on February 12, 1941, Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician from Telangana and a former governor of Maharashtra. Rao represented the Karimnagar constituency in the 13th edition of the Lok Sabha in 1998 and 1999. Between 1999 and 2004, he served as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Between 2016 and 2017 he served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, and between 2014 and 2019, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra. A lawyer by profession, Rao completed his education in law at Osmania University. A Sangh loyalist, he entered politics as an ABVP activist. In 1972, he was inducted as the Janasangh Chairman in Karimnagar and also went to jail during the emergency. Between 1985 and 1998, he represented the Metpally constituency in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He was inducted as the Andhra Pradesh BJP President in 1998. He is the brother of C Rajeshwara Rao, a former communist leader, and C Hanumanatha Rao, the former chancellor of Hyderabad Central University. He lost the 2004 Lok Sabha elections to TRS leader K Chandrashekhar Rao, who is the Chief Minister of Telangana, as of 2021. Rao belongs to the dominant Velamma community.
