Aurora borealis expected in unusual locations this weekend

Heads up, sky-watchers: a rare geomagnetic storm might bring the Northern Lights to 18 US states this weekend. NOAA has issued a moderate (G2) storm alert for June 14, thanks to some fast solar winds. If the weather cooperates, you could catch some seriously cool colors lighting up the night.

TL;DR

Aurora visibility zone stretches from Idaho to Rhode Island

The auroras might show up in places like Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, South Dakota, Maine, Vermont—and even as far south as New York and Oregon. The visibility zone stretches from Idaho all the way to Rhode Island and Wyoming.

When and where to look

Your best shot is between 1:00am and 2:00am when it's darkest. Find a spot away from city lights—clear skies make all the difference! NOAA says this storm could push the Northern Lights further south than usual, so keep your eyes peeled if you're in these states.
